Blog Post 1

This semester at school I am taking two education classes that both require 10 hours of Service Learning, which means that I will get to spend 20 hours in a classroom at an elementary school, helping and spending time with students, and learning alongside full-time teachers. I am very excited to get started and to be able to post about my experience on this blog.
The school that I have chosen to complete my Service Learning hours at is called Rock Canyon Elementary. It's the elementary school that I attended when I was younger. I loved the school while I went there, which is one of the reasons that I chose it. I looked it up online and found out that it is greater school than I had originally thought! On "Great Schools.com" I found that the test scores are above average in the state, which suggests that students are performing at or above grade level for the most part, including students from lower income families. How exciting! I also found that 80% of students are white, which doesn't surprise me much considering the location of the school is in northern Provo surrounded by predominantly white neighborhoods.
I have heard and from my own experience remember, that the staff at Rock Canyon are extremely kind and very experienced and caring teachers. It's no surprise to me that students at this school do well because the teachers here are very interested in the success of their students.
I am very excited about this Service Learning opportunity. I am looking forward to being in a real classroom with students and helping them to understand what they are being taught, and to help them do their best. This is going to be fun!
